Alex Palou Wins Rain-Delayed Nashville Race, Stretches IndyCar Points Lead to 83

Alex Palou won a heat-shortened, storm-delayed IndyCar race at Nashville Superspeedway on Monday, July 20, edging Josef Newgarden by 0.8731 seconds to collect his fifth victory of the 2026 season and open an 83-point lead in the championship standings.

The Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix had been scheduled for Sunday but was pushed a full day by rain and lightning around the 1.33-mile oval in Lebanon, Tennessee. When the race finally got going Monday afternoon, IndyCar cut the distance from 300 laps to 225 because of extreme heat, with track temperatures pushing toward 140 degrees Fahrenheit even as air temperatures sat in the low 90s.

Palou, driving the No. 10 DHL Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, started fourth and worked his way forward on strategy rather than outright pace. A caution on lap 123 for contact between Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi shuffled the pit sequence, and Palou cycled into the lead on lap 131 after his stop — a position he held for the final 95 laps despite a second caution when Dennis Hauger hit the SAFER barrier in Turn 3 on lap 181. "Saturday, I was not that comfortable in the car," Palou said afterward. "But Julian and everybody on the 10 and CGR prepared a really, really good car for today."

The result was notable beyond the win itself: all three podium finishers behind Palou drove for Team Penske. Newgarden crossed second, and David Malukas took third in a drive that began under difficult circumstances — he had been hospitalized Saturday afternoon after a hard practice crash and started Monday's race from the back of the field. "That was a team effort," Malukas said. "I've never driven so hard in my life." Scott McLaughlin finished fourth to round out a strong weekend for the Penske camp even without a win, and Felix Rosenqvist completed the top five for Meyer Shank Racing.

The victory was Palou's 24th career IndyCar win and pushed his championship total to 457 points, 83 clear of Malukas in second (374) and 87 ahead of Kyle Kirkwood in third (370), with six races remaining on the 2026 calendar. Palou, a four-time series champion, is chasing a record-tying fourth consecutive title and fifth overall — a stretch that includes the 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025 championships.

IndyCar's title fight resumes August 9 at Portland International Raceway, one of six remaining rounds before the season concludes at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 6.
