Conor Shanahan Needs One Heat Win at Long Beach. James Deane Needs Almost Everything Else.

An engine let go in the Top 32 at Las Vegas and turned a five-point deficit into a 47-point lead. Formula DRIFT settles its 2026 title on 23-24 October, under floodlights, on the same street course where the season started.

Formula DRIFT's 2026 PRO season ends next weekend on the Streets of Long Beach, and the arithmetic going into it is lopsided in a way that nobody could have predicted in August. Conor Shanahan arrives with 212 points. James Deane is second on 165, Branden Sorensen third on 164 and Jack Shanahan fourth on 162. Per Formula DRIFT's own report from Las Vegas, Conor needs to win a single heat at Round 8 to be champion; for anyone else to take it, they have to win the final round outright while he scores nothing at all.

The title did not change hands on a tandem call. It changed hands when an engine let go in the Top 32.

Six weeks ago it was a genuine fight. Deane went to Las Vegas with a five-point championship lead after Seattle. He did not complete a run in the Top 32: the engine in his O'Reilly / Pennzoil Ford Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD let go, the first mechanical failure he had suffered with the team, and it happened at the worst possible point in the calendar. Conor Shanahan won the event from there, beating Matt Field in the final with Jack Shanahan third. A five-point deficit became a 47-point lead in a single afternoon, and none of it was decided by a judge.

"The plan was to take the points win, but I didn't expect to make it as big as I did," Shanahan said afterwards. "All roads lead to Long Beach now."

That is three wins in 2026 for the Red Bull / GT Radial / JYR Toyota GT86: the season opener at Long Beach in April, Round 6 at Seattle in August, and Las Vegas in September. Shanahan has not won a Formula DRIFT PRO championship before — he finished eighth in the standings as a rookie in 2024 — and he would wrap up a first one at the same street course where he opened the year.

On the other side of the fight is the most decorated driver the series has: Deane has five PRO titles, more than anyone else in Formula DRIFT history. He took the last one in 2025 in such a way that it is hard to see this season as anything but a reversal — he clinched it at Round 7 in Utah, the first time in the series' 22-year history that anyone had settled the championship before the finale. This year he is the one who needs the finale to go his way, and needs it to go badly for somebody else at the same time.

The venue is the other story here. Formula DRIFT crowned its champion at Irwindale Speedway every year from 2004 until the track closed, and it closed for good: the final event, billed as the Farewell Extravaganza, ran on 21 December 2024, and the grandstands have since been pushed over by excavators. The 63-acre site is being redeveloped into an industrial business park. The finale moved to the Long Beach street course in 2025, and for 2026 the series has moved it into the dark — a full floodlight package, fireworks, and the first standalone night running of a Long Beach PRO round.

Formula DRIFT president Ryan Sage framed the night format as an attempt to replicate the feeling and essence of what a finals should feel like, which is a fairly direct admission of what the series has been missing since Irwindale went under the dozers. A daytime street round in April is a season opener. A night round with floodlights and fireworks in October is supposed to be something else.

The format is unchanged: qualifying on Friday locks in seeding, and Saturday runs tandem eliminations from the Top 32 through the Great 8 and the Final 4 to the final. The course sits in the lot adjacent to the Long Beach Arena, at the convention centre — the same patch of Long Beach where Jack Shanahan took his first career PRO win at last year's finale.

If Conor Shanahan wins one tandem battle, it is over early and the rest of Saturday is a formality for the title, if not for the event. If his GT86 breaks in qualifying the way Deane's Mustang broke at Las Vegas, four drivers are separated by 50 points with one event left and the night gets considerably more interesting. That is the whole championship now: one heat, or one failure.
