Formula Drift's Indianapolis Debut Ends Early — Storms Cancel the PRO Round for the First Time in Series History
Round 5 was supposed to be Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park's first taste of Formula Drift competition. Instead, severe storms, lightning, and flooding forced a grandstand evacuation and, after five hours of trying to save the track, the first PRO Championship cancellation in the series' 23-year history.
Formula Drift's first-ever visit to Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park was supposed to close out with PRO Championship Round 5 on Saturday, August 1. Instead, severe storms rolled through the venue that afternoon — rain, lightning, and flooding severe enough that organizers evacuated the grandstands as conditions turned unmanageable. Track staff spent more than five hours working to pump and drain standing water off the circuit before accepting that competition couldn't safely continue. Formula DRIFT canceled the remainder of the PRO round outright — the first cancellation of any kind in the series' 23-year history.
The cancellation only affected the PRO Championship. PROSPEC, Formula Drift's development-tier series, had already run its Round 3 the day before, on Friday, July 31, without incident — and with a moment of its own: 14-year-old Camren Sorensen became the youngest winner in Formula Drift history at that event. It was the storm arriving a day later, specifically for the PRO field's turn on track, that ended Indianapolis's debut weekend early.
"After a successful PROSPEC Championship Round yesterday, it is with a heavy heart that we make this announcement," Formula DRIFT president Ryan Sage said in the series' statement confirming the cancellation. Despite the washout, the PRO field's drivers stayed and ran a burnout session for the fans who'd remained through the weather, rather than packing up and leaving the venue empty-handed.
Indianapolis was one of three brand-new venues added to Formula Drift's 2026 schedule, and it now goes down as a debut with no PRO Championship result at all — no points awarded, no standings shift, just a rainout in the series' record book. There's no makeup date announced for the missing round; the PRO Championship picks back up at Evergreen Speedway in Seattle on August 21-22, followed by Las Vegas in September and the Long Beach finale in October.
