Bulega had started from pole and looked set to extend a run of dominance that had defined the 2026 WorldSBK season, but Lecuona rode a defensive final lap, holding his line through the penultimate corner to cross the line first. Yari Montella completed the podium for Barni Spark Racing, finishing 6.711 seconds back, with Sam Lowes fourth for the Marc VDS Ducati squad. All of the top finishers were riding Ducati Panigale V4 Rs, underlining the manufacturer's grip on the current championship.
For Lecuona, the win closed out a long road. He entered world championship racing in 2016 in Moto2, moved up to a full-time MotoGP seat with Tech3 KTM for the 2020 and 2021 seasons without a podium, and switched to World Superbike in 2022 with Honda's factory HRC team before joining Bulega at Aruba.it Racing Ducati for 2026. Race 1 at Donington marked his first victory in any world championship class after a decade of racing at the top level.
The result proved to be a single bright spot in an otherwise familiar weekend rather than a shift in the championship order. Lecuona crashed out of Sunday's Superpole race, and Bulega responded by winning both the Superpole race and Race 2 to complete a lopsided sweep of the round overall. Axel Bassani finished fourth in Race 2 aboard the Bimota, a result his team pointed to as a sign of progress after a difficult stretch of the season.
In the championship standings following the UK Round, Bulega leads with 491 points to Lecuona's 358, a gap of 133 points through eight rounds. Montella sits third on 211, ahead of Alex Lowes on 182 and Sam Lowes on 177 — a table that still reflects Ducati's near-total control of the 2026 season even after its dominant rider was finally beaten once.
Donington was round eight of the 2026 WorldSBK calendar. The series' next round will determine whether Lecuona's win was the start of genuine intra-team competition at Aruba.it Racing or simply the one weekend Bulega didn't have the answer.
